Conservatives must axe boiler tax to retain last shreds of electoral hope

Campaign group Net Zero Watch says that green Conservatives are destroying the party’s last few remaining shreds of electoral hope.

It was revealed today that two DESNZ ministers, Graham Stuart and Lord Callanan, threatened to resign if Rishi Sunak cancelled plans for the so-called ‘boiler tax’, which would have seen extra costs loaded onto the sale of new gas boilers.

Threatened with a Parliamentary rebellion by Conservative MPs concerned about the effect on their constituents, and with manufacturers already ramping up prices of new boilers, the Government started to step away from the plan three weeks ago.

It now seems that it is in limbo, with Rishi Sunak caught between the conflicting demands of his backbenchers and the Green blob.

Net Zero Watch director Andrew Montford said:

The Green fringe are determined to impose even heavier financial burdens – on their hard-pressed constituents and on the public in general. The party must axe the boiler tax to retain its last shreds of electoral hope.
