GWPF Panel Debate: No Fly Zone Europe?

Holger Krahmer (MEP) and the Global Warming Policy Foundation are pleased to invite you to a public panel debate on the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme and its potential impact on UK and international aviation.

No Fly Zone Europe? Will Europe's Green Policy Trigger Global Trade War?

When: Thursday, 30 June 2011 --   12:30 - 14:00

Where: Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, 1 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5DB.

Panel Participants

Holger Krahmer - Member of the European Parliament, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.

Andrew Herdman - Director General, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines

Nancy N. Young - Vice President, Environmental Affairs, Air Transport Association of America, Inc.

Lord Lawson - Chairman of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

Next year, all airlines flying into and within Europe will have to abide by the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). As a result, passengers will be subject to the costs of both the ETS and aviation tax. They will effectively be paying double taxation.

Even more controversial is the inclusion of carriers from non-member-state airlines. China and the United States have made it clear that they regard the inclusion of non-EU airlines in the ETS, without their consent, as illegal. Both countries have threatened to retaliate with trade sanctions if the EU makes any attempt to force foreign airlines to comply with its ETS.

The current debate within the EU seems rather fluid and its outcomes are likely to have major ramifications for international trade and policy-making.
