Net Zero Watch says Sunak has snubbed climate advisers

Welcoming the government’s decision to back away from imposing a tax on gas boilers, the campaign group warned that more problems lie ahead if Mr Sunak refuses to launch a major review of Net Zero

Over the weekend, it was reported that the Government is backing away from its planned ‘boiler tax’ scheme. Welcoming the news, Net Zero Watch director Andrew Montford said:

This is an embarrassment for Mr Sunak, but it is also a clear snub to the Climate Change Committee, who have been campaigning for a ban on gas boilers for a long time.

But Mr Montford warned that the Government will face further embarrassment if it continues to refuse to face up to the impossibly high costs of decarbonisation.

The Government has been pursuing irrational energy policies. If they refuse to accept the reality that Net Zero is impossible, they will face serial political humiliation.

Net Zero Watch is calling for a complete overhaul of the Net Zero project. Mr Montford said:

We now know that the Climate Change Committee’s advice to Government has largely been based in fantasy. The costs they have been projecting are simply false. With the roles of chairman and CEO at the Climate Change Committee currently unfilled, this is an ideal moment for Mr Sunak to put energy policy back on a reality-based path.
