UK

Blackout near miss

The UK came perilously close to a blackout. Kathryn Porter gave the technical details on her blog, and also discussed it on Mike Graham’s Talk Radio show.

Boiler ban goes, boiler tax stays

Labour cancelled plans to ban gas boilers, but will continue with plans to fine heating companies that don’t sell enough heat pumps.

Is Miliband under threat?

Speculation is growing that Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is starting to be seen as a liability in the higher echelons of the Labour Party.

Grid constraints payments rise

Grid constraints (paying windfarms to switch off and then dealing with the fallout) increased sharply in 2024. Windfarms can earn more being switched off than from actually generating electricity.

Price cap rises

The energy price cap was lifted by 1.25%. The cap has risen consistently since the general election last year, and further rises are expected. Most of the increase can be ascribed to Net Zero policy (see blog posts section below).

Lords debate hydrogen

The House of Lords debated the recent Science and Technology Committee report advocating hydrogen. Lord Lilley criticised the lack of a cost-benefit analysis. Lord Moynihan pointed out that the costings in the report were fictional.

North Sea output to decline fast

A government report warned that North Sea output will decline quickly in the wake of Mr Miliband’s tax changes.

International

Green banking group collapses

The Net Zero banking alliance, a group of eco-activist bank bosses, fell apart. Almost all the big US banks have now departed.

The Donald laughs

President-elect Trump said there would be no windfarms on his watch. He also ridiculed UK renewables policy.

Biden’s sabotage

President Biden (or those pulling his strings) put in place a number of bans on drilling for offshore oil and gas. Reversing them will require an Act of Congress.

Austria to get sceptic government

Herbert Kickl, the head of Austria’s climate-sceptic FPO party, was invited to form a new government.

Etc…

Andrew was on Alex Phillips Talk Radio show, talking about the latest increase in the energy price cap and then again talking about the effect of Net Zero policy on bills.

Angela Knight, a former head of Energy UK, told David Bull that the government was lying to the public about renewables.

A former Cabinet Office official warned that civil servants working on energy policy are ideologically committed to decarbonisation, so politicians will find it hard to make them change course.

Why do windfarms get the gas price?

Time after time, I come across people saying that it’s madness that everyone in the electricity market receives the same price as the most expensive generator to run (typically a gas-fired power stati

Record renewables subsidy payments in 2024

Net Zero Watch has revealed that subsidies paid to renewables under the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme hit new highs in 2024. The previous record, of just under £2.3 billion, was set in 2020.

Why have power prices fallen so little?

Gas prices are a major driver of electricity prices. However, although gas prices have come down a lot since the peak of the Ukraine war, electricity prices are still a long way above where we might
